    Summary

    The Oncology Nursing Foundation provides funding to support the education, research, and leadership development of oncology nurses. The foundation provides:

    • scholarships, career development, academic education awards, and more to fulfill the career potential of nurses.
    • research grants and fellowships to identify and test new insights into patient care.
    • scholarships and awards to awaken the leadership potential in oncology nurses, learn the newest treatments and management strategies in cancer care and ensure the future of our profession. 
    • support to ONS Chapters to develop and support leadership at the local level.
     

    History of Funding

    Current funding opportunities include:


    Breast Cancer Community Education Grants for ONS Chapters: To increase breast cancer awareness in communities by supporting nurse-directed and community-focused educational programs.


    Addressing Cancer Health Disparities Through Evidence-Based Cancer Nursing Research (RE42): To support oncology nursing research addressing cancer health disparities, including in the topic areas of breast, colorectal, lung or prostate cancer.


    Addressing the Adverse Effects of Immunotherapy and Emerging Therapies on Cancer Patients (RE43): To support oncology nursing research in symptom science addressing the adverse effects of immunotherapy and emerging therapies used in the treatment of cancer patients. Symptom Science in immunotherapy and emerging therapies has been identified as one of the top cancer nursing research priorities in need of new knowledge.


    2021 Josh Gottheil Bone Marrow Transplant Career Development Award: To support non-advanced practice level registered nurses working in bone marrow transplantation by providing financial assistance to attend a nursing continuing professional development that will further the nurses' professional goals as they relate to transplant nursing. This award cannot be used for tuition in an academic program or for specialty certification.


    2021 Leadership Scholarship Opportunities: To support a registered nurse, working in oncology, interested in developing their leadership skills to improving cancer care by attending a leadership continuing education program.

  • Eligibility Details

    Breast Cancer Community Education Grants for ONS Chapters: Eligible applicants are US ONS chapters.


    Addressing Cancer Health Disparities Through Evidence-Based Cancer Nursing Research (RE42): The principal investigator must be a registered nurse actively involved in some aspect of cancer patient care, education or research and be PhD or DNSc prepared that has received and completed at least one research study of at least $50,000 as PI. Membership in ONS is not required.


    Addressing the Adverse Effects of Immunotherapy and Emerging Therapies on Cancer Patients (RE43): The principal investigator must be a registered nurse actively involved in some aspect of cancer patient care, education or research and be PhD or DNSc prepared that has received and completed at least one research study of at least $50,000 as PI. Membership in ONS is not required.


    2021 Josh Gottheil Bone Marrow Transplant Career Development Award:

    • Currently employed as a registered nurse working in bone marrow transplantation with a minimum of 75% devoted to direct patient care. Preference will be given to non-advanced practice (bedside) nurses. 
    • One or more years in BMT nursing practice prior to application due date.

    2021 Leadership Scholarship Opportunities:

    • Applicant must be a registered nurse currently working in oncology. There is no set number of years in oncology or academic degree, required for this scholarship.
    • Those wishing to be considered for the ONCC Emerging Leaders Scholarship must currently hold an ONCC certification.
    • Leadership course selected by applicant must be for nursing continuing professional development and cannot be for used for credits towards an academic degree.
    • Leadership course is up to the discretion of the applicant and can be outside of nursing, (i.e., business or leadership/management). However, the course cannot be a component of a larger non-leadership course/course (i.e. ONS Congress track).

    Deadline Details

    Breast Cancer Community Education Grants for ONS Chapters: Open applications accepted but must be received by the Oncology Nursing Foundation no later than two weeks prior to the program start date. Applications will remain open until funds are expended.


    Addressing Cancer Health Disparities Through Evidence-Based Cancer Nursing Research (RE42): Letter of Intent is to be submitted by May 17, 2021. Applications are to be submitted by July 15, 2021.


    Addressing the Adverse Effects of Immunotherapy and Emerging Therapies on Cancer Patients (RE43): Letter of Intent is to be submitted by May 17, 2021. Applications are to be submitted by July 15, 2021.


    2021 Josh Gottheil Bone Marrow Transplant Career Development Award: Applications are to be submitted by June 15, 2021. A similar deadline is anticipated, annually.


    2021 Leadership Scholarship Opportunities: Applications are to be submitted by September 1, 2021. A similar deadline is anticipated, annually.

    Award Details

    Breast Cancer Community Education Grants for ONS Chapters: Up to $1,000 is available to qualified ONS Chapters.


    Addressing Cancer Health Disparities Through Evidence-Based Cancer Nursing Research (RE42): Grant up to $100,000 will be awarded with funding period of up to two years.


    Addressing the Adverse Effects of Immunotherapy and Emerging Therapies on Cancer Patients (RE43): Grant up to $150,000 will be awarded with funding period of up to two years.


    2021 Josh Gottheil Bone Marrow Transplant Career Development Award: Up to four awards of $2,000 will be granted.


    2021 Leadership Scholarship Opportunities: Up to $1,200 registration fee to attend a leadership nursing continuing professional development program held either virtually or in-person.
