    Summary

    The Junior League of Washington (JLW) makes a difference in the community through financial and volunteer support of literacy-focused programs, contests, and scholarship opportunities. Grant and Scholarship opportunities include:
    • MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: JLW awards, annually, the Meg Graham Scholarship, Celebrating Service and Leadership.
    • RESOLUTION READ: Resolution Read is a Junior League of Washington program that puts new books in the hands of children who might not otherwise have access to them.
    • TARGETED GRANTS: The Targeted Grants and Volunteer Resources (TGVR) Committee evaluates applications and makes recommendations for JLW Targeted Grants given to community organizations.
    • OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Opportunity Grants are awarded to organizations demonstrating an unexpected short-term financial need or smaller-denomination financial need related to their respective missions and/or operations.
     

    History of Funding

    MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: None is available

    RESOLUTION READ: In The Foundation's centennial year (2012/2013), JLW volunteers purchased and distributed 100,000 new books to children in the metropolitan area. 

    TARGETED GRANTS: Past recipients of JLW Targeted Grants include Bright Beginnings and Reading Partners (2016), Children's Hospital Foundation (2013), The DC Public Library Foundation (2014), Horton's Kids (2013 and 2015), Inner City Inner Child (2009), etc.

    OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Past recipients of the JLW's Opportunity Grants include Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys (2016), So What Else (2016), For Love of Children (2016), 826DC (2013 and 2014), Carpenter's Shelter (2014), Hope House DC (2013), etc.

    Additional Information

    MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Applicant must have an outstanding volunteer service record, be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, and show the promise of continued success.

    RESOLUTION READ: Resolution Read, which is part of the JLW's Literacy Events Planning Committee, provides books to programs focused on:
    • the importance of reading aloud to children;
    • placing age-appropriate books in the homes of children; and
    • providing more books to schools and libraries, with a large emphasis on children from birth to fifth grade. 
    TARGETED GRANTS: JLW looks for programs that work to improve the literacy and life skills of women, children, and/or families, meet defined objectives when evaluated against measurable outcomes, and have strong leadership.

    OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Organizations that have received more than $20,000 from JLW in either the current fiscal year (June 1, 2016 – May 31, 2017) or the previous fiscal year (June 1, 2015 – May 31, 2016) are not eligible for Opportunity Grants at this time.

  • Eligibility Details

    MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Applications for the scholarship are accepted from any high school senior who is a DC resident; attends a public, charter, private, or parochial high school in DC; and is matriculating to an accredited, four-year, post-secondary college or university in the fall.

    RESOLUTION READ: To be considered, requests for books must meet at least one of the three children's reading focus areas:
    • lack of reading materials in the home; or
    • lack of reading materials and resources in school classrooms and libraries; or
    • lack of exposure to reading aloud (ages 0- 5).
    TARGETED GRANTS: Eligible applicants are organizations that focus on literacy in their project goals.

    OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations demonstrating an unexpected short-term financial need or smaller-denomination financial need related to their respective missions and/or operations.

    Deadline Details

    MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: Applications must be postmarked and submitted by March 1, 2017.

    RESOLUTION READ: Book applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

    TARGETED GRANTS: Applications were to be submitted by September 16, 2016. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.

    OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Applications for each round must be submitted by 8 p.m. ET on the following dates: December 9, 2016; February 15, 2017; and April 7, 2017. 

    Award Details

    MEG GRAHAM SCHOLARSHIP: One award will be granted. Award is a $10,000 scholarship.

    RESOLUTION READ: Award amount varies based on scope and size of project also on the availability of books and funding.

    TARGETED GRANTS: JLW will award at least one Targeted Grant to at least one worthy organization in the community. Past awards have been in the $20,000 - $30,000 range. A similar amount is expected this year.

    OPPORTUNITY GRANTS: Number of awards vary. Awards are up to $1,000.
