    Summary

Recent events highlight how important and delicate this moment is for policing and its relationship to the community. These events have generated new urgency to seek new solutions and create lasting collaborative relationships between local police and the public. The Open Society Foundations support bold, innovative solutions that address root causes and advance systemic change. We see great value in working with local police associations, which nurture the fraternal and sororal bonds of local police, influence the practices of local police departments, and provide their own channel for partnership with the community. With hundreds of thousands of sworn police officers affiliated with thousands of local police associations around the country, the potential agents of change are many and diverse. The Open Society Foundations are dedicating funds for projects lasting from a few months up to 24 months.
